Hamptons Sells, Cannes Develops, Tribeca Opens

A documentary arrived at Hamptons with a distribution deal already in place. Cannes Critics' Week is helping short-film directors build their first features. Tribeca has opened its 2027 doors, including a production award big enough to finance a film.
BIG MOVES
Hamptons launches a documentary with distribution
Deadline reported on October 2 that Obscured Releasing acquired North American rights to Anne Sundberg's documentary The Drug in Our Pocket before its world premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival. The film premiered October 3 and will continue to Heartland and Newport Beach, with a theatrical release planned for early 2027.
The deal was announced before an audience had seen the film at Hamptons. That means the premiere could do a different job: introduce the finished film to press and moviegoers while the distributor begins building the release.

Strategic takeaway: If distribution is one of your goals, prepare for those conversations before the premiere. Have a trailer, strong stills, clear rights paperwork, audience information, and a realistic release plan ready. A festival date gives buyers a reason to pay attention, and your materials help them decide what they can do with the film.
Cannes keeps helping short-film directors move into features
Screen Daily reported on October 2 that Molly Manning Walker and Johanna Pyykkö are among the filmmakers selected for the 2026 Next Step II program from Cannes Critics' Week. The weeklong workshop in Corsica brings seven directors together with three composers to work on feature scripts, sound, and music while those projects are still being rewritten.
This is follow-through from a festival relationship. Next Step is designed for directors who previously screened a short at Critics' Week, then helps them make the jump to a first feature. The program says 45 features have already been completed through Next Step, including films that later premiered at Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, and Toronto.

Strategic takeaway: When a festival selects your short, ask what support continues after the screening. Alumni workshops, labs, introductions, and project programs can help you build the next film. Keep the relationship active and know which project you want to move forward when an opportunity opens.
Tribeca opens submissions and a $1.2 million path
Tribeca opened submissions September 30 for its June 3 through 12, 2027 festival. Features have an early deadline of October 21, while shorts and music videos have an early deadline of October 28. The festival is also accepting applications for the tenth AT&T Untold Stories program through January 18.
Five Untold Stories finalists will pitch at Tribeca in June. One filmmaker receives a $1.2 million production prize, year-round support, and a guaranteed premiere at the 2028 festival. The application requires a feature screenplay and a director, and the project must be ready to enter pre-production in July 2027.

Review the AT&T Untold Stories application
Strategic takeaway: Choose the Tribeca route that matches the stage of your project. Submit the film itself to the festival. Apply to Untold Stories when the screenplay, director, budget, and production plan are ready for a financing decision. If the project is still an early idea, give it time and apply when the package can hold up in that conversation.
