Fantasia hands out its 2026 awards - and the winners tell you something about where genre is heading
Fantasia International Film Festival - currently running in Montreal through August 2 - held its juried awards ceremony on July 25. The top honor, the Cheval Noir for Best Film, went to Hanna Bergholm's Nightborn, a Finnish-Lithuanian-French-UK co-production. Seidi Haarla, who stars opposite Rupert Grint, took Outstanding Performance. Kasper Kalle's No Rest for the Wicked swept Best Director and Best Actor for Pilou Asbæk. Andrea Corsini's Ferine won Best Cinematography and Best Score, with the latter going to legendary composer Pino Donaggio at 84 years old.

Venice announces its 2026 competition - and independent filmmakers are leading it
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival unveiled its full lineup on July 23. The festival runs September 2 through 12 on the Lido. The 20-film competition is dominated by independent filmmakers - Martin McDonagh, Werner Herzog, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Lee Chang-dong, Florian Zeller - with notably little Hollywood studio or streamer-backed fare. Artistic director Alberto Barbera said the lineup "bolsters the idea of cinema as an extraordinary tool to understand the real world." The single U.S. indie in competition is Casey Affleck's gothic mystery Company, starring Nick Nolte and Ben Mendelsohn.

Hong Kong International Film Festival names a new executive director
The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society has appointed Fred Tsui as its new executive director, succeeding Albert Lee. Tsui - a veteran sales agent, producer, festival juror, and AMPAS member - takes over September 23. He will oversee HKIFF and its year-round activities including the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum. HKIFFS chairman Wilfred Wong described Tsui as someone who "approaches cinema from the perspectives of an executive, a critic, a festival juror and a lifelong cinephile."

Leadership transitions at major festivals matter. New directors bring new programming priorities, fresh international relationships, and a different appetite for the kinds of films they champion. HKIFF is one of Asia's most important platforms for independent cinema. Tsui's background in international sales and co-production suggests a director who understands how films travel across markets. If your film has any connection to Asian stories, international themes, or co-production potential, it is worth watching how this festival evolves under his direction.
FESTIVAL SPOTLIGHT
Waco Independent Film Festival - Waco, TX
The Waco Independent Film Festival just wrapped its 10th anniversary edition, held July 16 through 19. This year the festival accepted 164 projects from 940 submissions, including 126 short films and 17 unproduced screenplays. Waco Indie introduced a new Short Film Grand Prize this year specifically designed to support the winning film's theatrical run towards Oscar qualification.
FFI client Ellen Ancui just returned from this year's festival with her Oscar-qualified film SAVERIO - and had this to say:
"Waco was truly an exceptional festival that gave us an incredible experience. I was interviewed by six or seven different press outlets on opening night, then had another round of interviews a few days later. My daughter got to watch me do a Q&A, meet other filmmakers, and socialize with people who, like me, apparently think it's perfectly normal to spend months schlepping a film around the country."
Six press interviews on opening night. A genuine filmmaker community. A city that actually shows up for independent film. That is what a well-run regional festival looks like from the inside. And just moments after the festival wrapped, they opened submissions for next year. Get in before that early deadline!
