Why Watching Movies Is Part of Your Job as an Independent Filmmaker

Aug 26, 2025

When we think about the role of an independent filmmaker, we often focus on the obvious: writing scripts, finding funding, shooting, editing, and navigating the festival circuit. But there’s another crucial part of the job that doesn’t always get the spotlight—watching films.

As indie filmmakers, we can’t create in a vacuum. We need to immerse ourselves in the work of others to sharpen our craft, stay inspired, and understand the landscape we’re operating in.

1. Learn from Your Peers
Film festivals aren’t just about premieres and awards—they’re classrooms. By watching what other independent filmmakers are producing, you see firsthand what types of films are resonating, what creative risks are paying off, and how different storytellers are overcoming budget or resource challenges. Every screening is a chance to learn.

2. Stay Connected to the Industry
Festivals also allow you to observe the trends and tastes of programmers, audiences, and critics. What genres are breaking through? What themes are capturing attention? This insight helps you position your own projects more strategically.

3. Dream Bigger with Mainstream Films
At the same time, it’s just as important to go to the cinema and see what’s thriving at the box office. Big-budget films show us where the industry is heading, what audiences are craving, and how storytelling evolves on a large scale. They also remind us to expand our vision—to dream bigger than what’s in front of us now.

4. Watching Films = Professional Development
Think of film-watching as ongoing training. Just as actors take classes and athletes study game footage, filmmakers should be consistently engaging with cinema—indie and mainstream—as part of their job. It’s not just entertainment; it’s professional development.

So yes, your job as an independent filmmaker includes writing, producing, editing, and promoting. But it also includes sitting in theaters, festival halls, and living rooms, actively watching and learning. Because every film you see adds fuel to the filmmaker you’re becoming.
